Monasterio de Santo Estevo, Nogueira De Ramuin - Ourense

Parador De Santo Estevo

References to the monastery's existence can found as far back as the 10th Century, although its origins appear to date back even further, to the 6th and 7th centuries. Inside, various styles can be seen from Romanesque to Baroque, and its three cloisters (Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance in style) are not to be missed. These are the gate cloister, the kitchen cloister and the bishop's cloister. The latter is the only cloister in the whole of Galicia, aside from the Cathedral of Tuy, which is preserved exactly as it was originally built. Also of particular note are the Baroque façade which dates back to the 18th Century and the 3 monumental entrance stairs, which were added in 1739. The building was declared a historic artistic monument in 1923. The air-conditioned hotel offers 77 rooms in total and offers a lobby with 24-hour reception, lift access, a café, restaurant and a TV room. Conference facilities and Internet/WLAN access are also offered. Guests arriving by car may wish to make use of the parking facilities.

General information and How to arrive Parador De Santo Estevo General information and How to arrive Parador De Santo Estevo
The Monastery is one of Galicia's oldest, founded in the 6th century a.c.e. The original construction is Romanesque, though does show Gothic tendencies. Worth nothing are its 18th century baroque facade, its monumental staircase and its three cloisters: 'De la portería', 'De la Cocina', and 'De los Obispos'. The latter is the only cloister in Galicia, together with the cathedral in Tui, whose original construction has been preserved intact.

The Parador is located in Santo Estevo de Rivas de Sil, within the township of Nogueira de Ramuín, in the Ribera Sacra region, 28 km from Ourense. The main access road can be reached from the A-52 'Rias Baixas' motorway (Madrid-Benavente-Vigo), which passes through Ourense.

Once in Ourense, there are two options: The easiest and shortest route is to take the C-536 road towards 'Pobra de Trives' and, at Km. 7, take the road towards Luintra.

A second option is to take the N-120 road towards Monforte de Lemos-Ponferrada and at Km. 550, in Penalva, take the exit towards Luintra, continuing to Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil.

What to eat

The cuisine is based on products from the river (due to its geographical location), as well as the traditional foods of Galicia, with the region boasting an outstanding wine culture.

Notable among the typical dishes are octopus, elvers and river trout. Of the meats, the excellent Galician beef should be highlighted, with dishes such as pork with turnip greens and Galician soups and stews rounding out the offer.
Among the desserts, the Bica de Trives and Bica de Castro Caldelas are especially noteworthy.
